Marymount Volleyball Remains No. 1

Two victories keep the Sailors atop the CIF-SS Division 1A rankings.

The CIF Southern Section released this week's girls volleyball polls and Marymount High School maintained its place at the top of the Division 1A rankings.

The poll was voted on, coordinated and finalized by the CIF Southern Section Girls Volleyball Coaches Advisory Committee. The polls will be updated every week throughout the season.

Marymount, an all-girls Catholic school across the street from UCLA, has been a perennial volleyball power for over a decade under 2010 CIF Coach of the Year Cari Klein, who led the Sailors to the division title last November.

The Sailors are off to a fast start this season, beating host Redondo Union in four sets in their opener and sweeping Harvard-Westlake on Monday in North Hollywood.

The top five in the Division 1A poll remain the same as the preseason rankings. Marymount is No. 1, followed by Corona del Mar, Laguna Beach, Vista Murrieta and Valencia.

There was a lot of shuffling in the bottom half of the Top 10. Los Osos dropped out of this week's poll while Murrieta Valley moved up from seventh to sixth. Notre Dame Academy, Marymount's Sunshine League rival, jumped from 10th to seventh. El Dorado moved up one spot from No. 9 to No. 8 and Saugus moved into the No. 9 spot. Redlands East Valley, eighth in the initial poll, dropped out and Anaheim Canyon moved into the tenth and final spot. Yucaipa and Beckman are listed as "others under consideration," just outside the Top 10.

Los Alamitos, the preseason favorite in Division 1AA, remains atop that division, followed by Dos Pueblos and Redondo Union and Edison.

Marymount will be one of 48 teams participating in the Durango Fall Classic Tournament this Friday and Saturday in Las Vegas. The Sailors are in Pool 1 with Green Valley of Henderson, Nevada, and host Durango.
