Spring Break Activities for Kids

School's out next week and there's lots of activities to keep the youngsters busy.

Los Angeles Unified schools will be on Spring Break the week of April 18 and parents are frantically trying to come up with activities for their children to make great use of the time during their vacation.

“It’s Spring Break, what do I do with my kids?” one dad asked. “Watching TV all day or playing video games is simply not an option.” 

Don’t panic, there are many cultural and recreational activities waiting for you right here in Westwood.

Another Westwood Charter parent announced, “We are not going out of town and I am actually looking forward to time spent right here in L.A.”

Most of us don’t even know that there is a planetarium at UCLA. It’s open to the public, is suitable for all ages and it’s free.

This stellar find takes place on Wednesday evenings at 8 p.m. Shows are 45 – 60 minutes and are given by current astronomy and astrophysics graduate students about the current night sky, constellations, astronomical phenomena and more. Telescope viewing is subject to weather conditions though.

The farmers market held Thursdays at the Veterans Administration offers a beautiful setting, tasty treats, great live music and an avian sanctuary and parrot rescue.  You can shop for yummy organic produce, fresh baked breads, French pastries, seafood, kettle corn or browse through the myriad of jewelry and clothing vendors.

The lunch carts will lure you toward the veteran’s garden lining a path fit with picnic tables complete with cloths. When you walk through the succulent and rose gardens you will come to the avian sanctuary, a haven for dozens of cockatoos, red and blue macaws, African greys, and ring-necked parakeets.

This weekend marks the second annual Santa Monica Science Festival sponsored by the National Park Service in partnership with the Natural History Museum.

There will be live animal displays, a campfire, animal tracking, hands-on demonstrations, nature walks and a chance to meet scientists. It’s taking place at Paramount Ranch, 2813 Cornell Road on Friday from 7pm-10pm; and Saturday from 11am-4pm.

The butterfly pavilion is open at the Natural History Museum downtown. From chrysalis to butterfly this screened in sanctuary is a garden filled with more than 30 species of butterflies.

The Grammy Museum at L.A. Live is presenting the first major exhibition exploring the four-decade history of hip hop in America. This exhibit is for kids 12 and older. 800 W. Olympic Blvd., Ste. A245 on Sunday through Friday from 11:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. and on Saturday, 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m.
