Ronni Chasen Killed with Same Gun Used in Suicide, Police Say

Police have yet to confirm that Harold Martin Smith shot Chasen, but are confident that her slaying was a random act and that her killer acted alone.

The gun used by a man to commit suicide at a Hollywood apartment building matches the one used to kill longtime publicist Ronni Chasen, police said Wednesday, citing preliminary test results of the weapon.

Harold Martin Smith, 43,  him to discuss the Chasen slaying. Police said a tip from the television show America's Most Wanted led them to Smith, and investigators had labeled him a ''person of interest'' in the case.

Although preliminary ballistics tests confirmed that Smith's gun matched the one used in Chasen's killing, Beverly Hills Police Chief David Snowden told reporters that further investigation was needed before police identify Smith as Chasen's killer.

''When they say ballistics match, that generally means that the gun used to shoot [Chasen] is the same gun used by Harold Martin Smith to commit suicide,'' Snowden said.

The shooting was likely a random act—a botched robbery—police said. Smith likely acted alone, according to police.

Chasen, 64, was  in the early morning hours of Nov. 16. She was likely heading home to her Westwood condominium.
