Alleged Drunk Driver Triggers Fiery 8-Vehicle Crash on 10 Freeway

The crash happened just east of the 405 Freeway early Sunday morning.

A 39-year-old woman was arrested for suspicion of drunken driving for triggering a eight-vehicle crash on the Santa Monica (10) Freeway in Palms on Sunday, the California Highway Patrol said.

At least one car was engulfed in flames, but no injuries were reported.

Melissa Harris, a resident of Los Angeles, was booked into the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Street Station jail, according to a department statement. Harris was driving a 2007 Toyota, and had a complaint of pain following the crash.

The crash was on the eastbound freeway, east of the San Diego (405) Freeway, was reported to the CHP at 1:20 a.m., according to the CHP.

"Due to the number of vehicles involved in this collision, the sequence of events is still being determined," according to the statement.

A 2004 Honda Civic was engulfed in flames following the crash. The driver of a 1999 BMW, a 19-year-old Santa Monica woman, had a complaint of pain from the crash.

The eight-vehicle crash involved a 2007 Toyota, a 2005 Toyota, a 2010 Chevrolet, a 1999 BMW, two 2004 Hondas, a 2003 Mercedes-Benz and a 2010 Toyota, according to the CHP.
