Blog: Century City Celebrates Earth Day

For 43 years, Earth Day has become a wonderful reminder to us that our everyday habits have an impact on the environment.

For 43 years, Earth Day has become a wonderful reminder to us that our everyday habits have an impact on the environment. From our routines at home, to what we do in the office, to the way we commute, we are constantly leaving a carbon footprint wherever we go.

Our commutes in particular not only create unnecessary fuel emissions, but also create a financial burden. According to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s study, “Better Transportation Options = Healthier Lives,” our lengthy commutes cost $100 billion each year in excess fuel costs and lost productivity!

This Earth Day, on April 22nd, let’s make some changes to the way we work and commute in an effort to reduce our individual and collective carbon footprint. Here is a list of tips that are easy to incorporate into your routine to commemorate this Earth Day and every day:

  • Plan an office wide carpool—arranging a car pool with coworkers is an easy, fun way to reduce fuel emissions on Earth Day.
  • Put computers and printers on energy saving settings—an easy change that can have a big effect.
  • Turn off lights in communal areas—if no one is using your conference room, storage area, or if you’re leaving your office for a meeting or to go get lunch, turn off the lights to reduce energy consumption.  Also turn off extra computers or other office appliances that may not get used regularly throughout the day.
  • Bike, walk or take public transportation—like carpooling, this is a great way to help reduce fuel emissions on Earth Day—and to get some exercise!
  • Participate in ridesharing—if  no one in your office commutes from your area, set up a rideshare along your route or join one that already exists for the week. This is another great way to reduce your carbon footprint and fuel emissions.
  • Reduce paper waste—if you’re printing multiple pages, make sure to set your print settings to “double sided” to reduce the amount of paper you use during your print job.  If you make a mistake with a print job or have to reprint something, you can use the blank backside of your document as scratch or note paper.
