Census: Los Angeles County Grows, But Slow

Los Angeles County's growth trails other Southern California counties and the state as a whole.

1. The population of Los Angeles County grew by 3.1 percent over the past decade, far slower than other Southern California counties, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures released Tuesday. The county remains the most populous in the state, with about 9.8 million residents, according to the Census Bureau. The city of Los Angeles has a population of about 3.8 million. California's overall population rose 10 percent from 33.8 million in 2000 to 37.2 million in 2010, according to the Census Bureau.

2. A former Century City attorney faces a maximum of three years in federal prison when she is sentenced June 20 for interfering with efforts by the Internal Revenue Service to collect more than $100,000 in taxes she owed. Michelle Renee Walker, 42, pleaded guilty Monday in Los Angeles federal court to interfering with the administration of the IRS, specifically admitting that she provided the law firm with a phony IRS document, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

3. The Los Angeles City Council took action Tuesday to prevent Gov. Jerry Brown from taking about $1 billion of the city's redevelopment money to help close California's budget deficit. Aware that the state Legislature was poised to vote this week to dissolve community redevelopment agencies, the council voted Tuesday to "encumber'' funds for redevelopment projects and put them out of Brown's reach.
