Austin Beutner Explores Mayoral Run

The deputy mayor files papers to begin an exploratory campaign.

1. Austin Beutner has resigned his position as deputy mayor and filed with the City Ethics Commission to begin an exploratory campaign for mayor. Beutner said he would emphasize job creation if elected, but did not offer any specifics. Beutner, a former partner of the private equity investment firm The Blackstone Group and a co-founder of the boutique investment banking firm Evercore Partners was chosen by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in January 2010 as the city's chief executive of economic and business policy.

2. John Deasy officially will become superintendent of the L-A Unified School District today, succeeding Ramon Cortines who retired after slightly more than two years in the position. Deasy has been with the district since August serving as a top deputy to Cortines. Deasy previously served as deputy director of education for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He also was superintendent of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and of Prince George's County Schools in Maryland.

3. At least 38 arrests were made Thursday night at Dodger Stadium as a series of strict security measures were used for the first time in an attempt to reassure the public about the stadium's safety but there were no violent offenses reported. Most of the arrests were for carrying open containers or drinking alcohol in public. LAPD officers were deployed at the game in response to the Opening Day attack in a stadium parking lot left San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow in a coma.

4. A decision on the Sacramento Kings' bid to move the National Basketball Association team to Anaheim could be known today as the NBA Board of Governors meetings end in New York City. If the board OKs the move, team officials will file for relocation by Monday's deadline. The potential move to Anaheim's Honda Center likely to draw opposition from L.A.'s Lakers and Clippers franchises. It would add a third team to the L.A. market, unprecedented for a market in NBA history.

5. Weather today: Sunny, highs around 80. Tonight: Clear, lows in the 50s.
