Metro Experts Support Constellation Boulevard Station

Scientists have advised the Metro Board of Directors Planning Committee to select the subway route that requires tunneling under Beverly Hills High School.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority released a report Wednesday on the Westside Subway Extension’s seismic and safety issues that favors a Constellation Boulevard location for the Century City stop. Metro states that scientists have recommended the Constellation Boulevard route in order to avoid two earthquake faults in the area. The experts, who include seismologists, geologists and engineers, said that tunneling can be done safely under Beverly Hills High School. Fieldwork and research also failed to detect any active or inactive oil wells on the high school campus that would be in the path of potential subway tunnels. However, no decision about the final placement of the subway route has been made.  The Westside Subway Extension …

Beverly Hills Mayor Battles Metro's Proposal to Tunnel Under BHHS

Patch sat down with Mayor Barry Brucker to discuss his thoughts on the city's efforts to stop an MTA subway from going under Beverly Hills High School.

Beverly Hills Mayor Barry Brucker remains opposed to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s proposal to build a tunnel under Beverly Hills High School as part of the Westside Subway Extension. “The MTA situation has been a frustrating undertaking on all parts,” Brucker told Patch. “The whole city is united in its desire not to go under the high school.” Initially, Metro had planned to extend its Purple Line subway westward with two stations in Beverly Hills—at Wilshire/La Cienega and Wilshire/Rodeo—before going on to a stop at Santa Monica Boulevard and Avenue of the Stars in Century City. But the location of the Santa Monica fault line has pushed the MTA to favor another Century City stop, one at Constellation Boulevard and Avenue of…

Guess what, for basic info such as the number of students at UCLA, Wikipedia will do just fine, thank you very much. Their information happens to come from the UCLA office of Analysis and Information Management: http://www.aim.ucla.edu/Statistics/enrollment/SummaryFall2007.pdf. And your information about the putative "thousands of employees" at Wilshire and Westwood comes from... where? Since you…   more ›

Metro: All Century City Subway Stops Still on the Table

A Beverly Hills Unified School District website says Metro is no longer considering a subway stop at Santa Monica Boulevard and Avenue of the Stars, but Metro officials say the posting is wrong.

A Beverly Hills Unified School District website says Metro is no longer considering a subway stop at Santa Monica Boulevard and Avenue of the Stars, but Metro officials say the stop has not been dropped from discussions. Metro officials say they are continuing to discuss two proposed options for Century City subway stops on Santa Monica Boulevard, although a Beverly Hills Unified School District website contends the agency has made a "unilateral decision" to drop one of them. A third option, at Constellation Boulevard and Avenue of the Stars, would require tunneling under Beverly Hills High School, something BHUSD opposes. District officials are concerned that if the Santa Monica Boulevard and Avenue of the Stars option is no longer being …

BHUSD President Clashes with Council Over Subway Fight

Lisa Korbatov tells City Council members that she objects to a tour of the high school and "clandestine" meetings with Metro and county officials.

Beverly Hills Unified School District Board of Education President Lisa Korbatov chided Beverly Hills City Council members Thursday for what she claimed were "unwarranted and improper actions" with county officials who will decide whether or not to build a subway tunnel under Beverly Hills High School. Korbatov's primary objection was to an "abbreviated tour" of the BHHS campus Thursday for Metropolitan Transportation Authority board member and Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas that was facilitated by Mayor Barry Brucker, Vice Mayor William Brien and City Manager Jeff Kolin. Korbatov said this was improper because it was done unofficially "with no minutes, no notes, no agenda" and with no experts to offer in-depth knowledge …

Westside Neighborhood Council Backs Constellation Subway Station

The panel votes to support the stop rather than one proposed for Santa Monica Boulevard.

The Westside Neighborhood Council voted Thursday to support building a subway station at Constellation Boulevard and Avenue of the Stars as part of the Purple Line extension. Nine council members favored the Constellation stop as opposed to a station proposed for Santa Monica Boulevard. Three members abstained after hearing the proposal from Susan Bursk, president of the Century City Chamber of Commerce. Bursk told the council that more than 27,000 employees work within a one-quarter mile radius of the proposed stop on Constellation Boulevard and Avenue of the Stars. That's about three times as many people who work within a quarter mile of the proposed Santa Monica Boulevard station, Bursk said. Constellation Boulevard is one block south …

Regardless of my position on the matter, I appreciate John Mirisch's participation here. Personally, I want to hear from, and hopefully dialogue with, those who have more direct influence on the matter. If only we could have this type of dialogue with more in the government.   more ›
