The organization was founded four years after the death of the famous pianist/composer, Thelonious Monk (1917-1982), by his family in partnership with the late Maria Fisher. Programs include Commitment to New Orleans Initiative, Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance, Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, National Jazz Curriculum, Jazz in the Classroom, Jazz Sports and BeBop to Hip-Hop, which began in 2004 at Washington Preparatory High School in South Los Angeles. Programs are designed to offer promising students the opportunities that are not otherwise available, or they may not otherwise have access to. The Los Angeles office, here in Century City, is operated by Dr. JB Dyas, Daniel Seeff and Paris Strother and focuses on education programs and outreach programs for Los Angeles public school students and teachers. Offices are also located in New Orleans and Washington, D.C.
