The following post first appeared on the website CityWatch and is being republished with permission from the author. WHAT’S METRO HIDING? - James Francis Dolan, PhD. Professor of Earth Sciences at USC’s Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. The guy may be tone-deaf, for all I know, but he is literally one of the region’s true geology rock stars. The go-to guy when it comes to faults, tectonics and all that jazz. I have no idea if his friends call him “Jim” or “Jimmy” or “J. F.” Somehow with all his contagious enthusiasm and dry sense of humor, I imagine that he’s a Jimbo, but it’s just a hunch. Jimbo Dolan, USC rock star. His rock star qualities became apparent at Metro’s Oct. 19 presentation when, as a member of a panel paid …

I care about the future of Beverly Hills. That means our children and the fact that they are in harm's way because a tunnel under Beverly Hills High School puts them in real danger. The facts are that a methane gas explosion is a very real danger. History proves that. There are documented cases …

Gridlock traffic on the Westside has some residents ready to move.

To submit a piece to Patch, email it to the site editor. My husband and I moved from two miles east of the 405 Freeway to two miles west of the 405 Freeway nearly four years ago. In the past three years, the traffic situation in our new neighborhood has only steadily gotten worse, and to the point where we are thinking of leaving Los Angeles. I was born here. My husband has lived here for over 40 years. I cannot imagine leaving, but I cannot imagine staying here if something does not change for the better. To travel east from our home in Brentwood after 2:30 p.m. is beyond painful and…

April 19 marks Holocaust Remembrance Day. As we remember those who perished, the president of Jewish World Watch notes that despite the adage “Never Again,” there have been 46 genocides since the Holocaust.
A few years ago, my father-in-law, David, stood on a corner in the small Ukrainian village of Tuchin and pointed to the spot where he last saw his mother, Chaya, his sister, Rachel, and her three small children in November 1941. The Nazis had invaded the Ukraine in June and by November it was clear that they were advancing on Tuchin. Chaya sent David off by foot to outrun the Nazis; as bad luck would have it, her daughters' children were suffering from the measles and had high fevers. The plan was for Chaya, Rachel and the children to join David on the eastward trek a few days later. Chaya waved goodbye to David, knowing that they would only be separated for a few days. Within hours of David's departure, the Nazis invaded. David's family…

Commentary submitted by Beverly Hills resident Tina Yaghoubi, a BHHS alumna and senior at UCLA studying political science. “How can you support the subway?” yelled one woman at the last Beverly Hills Metro meeting, “Don’t fix what’s not broken!” said another. Of all the heated rhetoric, it’s surprising to hear arguments attacking the subway project in its entirety when we’re home to some of the worst traffic…

George Vreeland Hill writes that Metro's plans for the Westside Subway Extension would not only adversely affect BHHS, but many Beverly Hills businesses as well.

Metro seems to have caused a divide between the citizens of Beverly Hills and those outside the city in regards to a subway plan that would run under Beverly Hills High School and the city. Some people have accused us (the people of Beverly Hills) of being greedy, self-centered and selfish for not wanting a subway that would help others. We and …

In sum, Passover is a great weeklong Jewish festival of freedom that points to our universal longing for a better, freer, and more just world.
This year the Jewish festival of Passover begins at sunset April 6 and lasts until Sunday night, April 15. The holiday is meant to be seven days, but there is a long-standing tradition for Jewish holidays celebrated outside of Israel to add a day. This is because, in ancient times, the Jewish year was not set according to a calculated calendar but rather simply by observing the status of the new moon in the sky, and there was some doubt as to when the holidays were. So, Passover outside of Israel is eight days long. The roots of the holiday are found in the biblical Book of Exodus, and tells the story of where God sends Moses to liberate the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. Telling and retelling the story is in fact central to …

Mirisch can't make it to the Metro hearings because Mirisch works for a living, Minoter. Try it for a change. Also: the good professor is a Dolan, not a Nolan. On the other hand, the director of Dark Knight is a Nolan not a Dolan. And while I'm a fan of Nolan, I don't have any obsession with Dolan, though I do have a passion for good, transparent government. And, yes, I'd love to sit down with …   more ›
