University High Girls 15th at City Track Finals

The Wildcats score in the 800, 1,600 and high jump events at Birmingham High.

The City Section Track & Field Championships were held Thursday at Birmingham High in Lake Balboa and the University High girls team came in 15th place overall with seven points.

Wildcats senior Cassandra Menendez Pineda finished fourth in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:22.81, earning her team four points. Maira Soliz of Roosevelt won in 2:19.54, followed by Monique Wang of Los Angeles (2:20.95) and Nancy Andrade of Marshall (2:21.95). 

Menendez Pineda also ran the 1,600 and finished sixth in 5:20.12, good for one point. Evelyn Gonzalez of San Pedro won in 5:14.57 and Geena Person of Birmingham was second in 5:15.18.

University junior Ronnika Perkins ran the 100-meter dash but failed to score, finishing eighth in 12.76. Lexis Lambert of Woodland Hills Taft won in 12.16.

Another junior, Aaliyah Jordan, scored the Wildcats' last two points with a fifth-place finish in the high jump. She was one of four girls to clear 5-2, but required more jumps to do so. Kendall Gustafson of Palisades won with a height of 5-6.

In the boys AA division, University senior Edem Gbegnon was sixth in the long jump with a leap of 12-8 1/4. He was also fourth in the shot put with a throw of 27-9 1/2. 

Dorsey won its second consecutive boys team title with 110 points and Carson won the girls competition with 93 points.
