UCLA Golfers Out at Women's Amateur

Senior Stephanie Kono and freshman Erynne Lee fall in the quarterfinals.

It looks like UCLA women's golf coach Carrie Forsyth can expect good things from incoming freshman Erynne Lee.

Lee was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the 111th U.S. Women's Amateur on Friday at the Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington, Rhode Island, but throughout the tournament she displayed poise beyond her years.

Bruins senior All-American Stephanie Kono also lost in the quarterfinals. She and Lee were the only UCLA players to reach the Elite Eight in the match play format.

Lee lost in 21 holes to Alabama senior Brooke Pancake while Kono fell 5 and 4 to Louisiana State sophomore All-American Austin Ernst, who won the NCAA Division I individual title in May.

Lee was 1-up after 15 holes on the 6,399-yard par 71 course, but Pancake birdied the 16th to even the match and each player parred the next for holes before Pancake prevailed on the 21st hole. It was the second straight time Lee went to extra holes. She needed 19 to get past Annie Park of Levittown, New York, in the round of 16.

Kono, a 21-year-old from Honolulu, Hawaii, fell behind early against Ernst and missed a five-foot par putt at the 14th hole that would've extended the match.

The Bruins won their third women's golf title (and first since 2004) in May at College Station, Texas, winning by four strokes over Purdue at College Station, Texas. to give UCLA its 107th NCAA title, more than any other school.

Ernst and Pancake each lost 1-up in the semifinals Saturday. The 36-hole final Sunday will be match defending champion Danielle Kang of Pepperdine against 17-year-old Moriya Jutanugarn of Thailand, who was the low amateur at the U.S. Women's Open in July.
