L.A. Triathlon Organizers Prepare for Carmageddon II

The course route will remain the same, but participants should stay tuned for updates on access routes, organizers say.

Carmageddon II will not affect the route of the Herbalife L.A. Triathlon on Sept. 30, which kicks off in Venice Beach the same day as the 405 closure. Organizers recommend participating athletes, particularly those traveling to the Westside from South Los Angeles, should stay tuned for travel updates.

The course itself will not impacted by the closure, organizers said.

Pacific Sports, the group organizing the triathlon, will coordinate with Caltrans and the Department of Transportation to map detour routes.

"We'll stick with their messaging and routing and make sure we're working in coordination with where their signage is," said Jan Fambro, media relations and outreach officer for the triathlon.

Triathlon participants can check Pacific Sports' website, Facebook and Twitter pages for updates on the race.

Pacific Sports spokesperson Jeff Boyer said he doesn't think the threat of Carmageddon will deter participants. More than 1,000 are registered so far, he said, which is more than were registered this time last year.

Pacific Sports has experience dealing with travel, traffic and parking issues at its events, Boyer said. Last May, the company helped organize the downtown L.A. finish line for the Amgen Tour of California, which took place in a traffic-heavy area near the STAPLES Center. The Lakers, Clippers and Kings played that day, but the company said there were no major problems.

"We're not nervous, but [Carmageddon] doesn't make life any easier," Boyer said. "We're just hoping through clear communication most problems will be able to be solved."
