In an ABC 20/20 interview, graduate student Kjerstin Gruys talked about what it was like to see herself after months of avoiding her reflection in store windows and bathroom mirrors.
"I had a little ambivalence, and at the same time, pleasure, because I was happy with what I saw."
Inspired by a story of Italian nuns who were "forbidden to look at themselves while they undressed," the now 29-year-old sociology student went mirror-free for one year to help improve her self-image.

Gruys was featured in a 20/20 obsessions-themed episode Aug. 15. She said avoiding her reflection, even on her wedding day, definitely paid off.
"It kind of opened up a new way of thinking about myself as a whole instead of just about my looks," she said in the 20/20 interview.
