Lloyd Shapley accepts the award in Stockholm.

UCLA emeritus professor of economics Lloyd Shapley recently accepted the Nobel Prize in economics in Stockholm.

Shapley shares the award, known officially as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, with Alvin Roth, a Harvard professor who recently transferred to Stanford University.

"You have never worked together. But together your contributions constitute one of those unexpected journeys, from basic research motivated by sheer curiosity, to practical use for the benefit of mankind," Torsten Persson, professor and member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, said about the winners.
