Senator Price Announces Run for L.A. City Council

Senator Curren Price Jr. (D-Culver City) will run for the City Council’s 9th District seat in the March 2013 elections. Assemblymember Holly Mitchell told Patch she would consider running for Price's Senate seat if it became vacant.

Senator Curren Price Jr. (D-Culver City) has issued an official statement announcing that he will run for the 9th District L.A. City Council seat in March 2013. Below is an excerpt from his official statement:

Dear Friends,

After careful deliberation and consultation with residents and local business and religious leaders, I have decided to enter the race for City Council District 9.

I am very familiar with the opportunities and obstacles that exist in this district, almost one-third of which is in the 26th Senate District, which I now represent.

The exciting job opportunities and developments associated with L.A. Live, Farmers Field and USC are tempered with the other realities of District 9, including high unemployment, struggling schools and the lack of clean and affordable housing.

I am running for this office to offer leadership by calling for a new level of collaboration among public and private sector resources.

I’m adopting the phrase, the “New 9th,” to signal a new level of commitment and enthusiasm to engage residents and community-based institutions to work together to improve the quality of life for all residents in the “New 9th!”

I plan to tap into the multicultural diversity of District 9 residents who make our city strong and produce creativity and innovation that can lift up a community and its institutions.

Price stated he would focus his priorities in the 9th Council District on three distinct broad and interrelated policy areas: community economic development, civic engagement and new initiatives.

There is also speculation that if Price wins a seat on the council, Assemblymember Holly Mitchell (D-Culver City) may run for Price's Senate seat in the October 2013 special election.

Patch contacted Mitchell who said, "If there is a vacancy in Curren Price's Senate seat, I will give it serious consideration."

Price is running to replace Councilwoman Jan Perry, who is currently running for mayor of Los Angeles. The 9th Council District abuts downtown, covering USC and the neighborhoods of Central Alameda and part of the South Figueroa Corridor, among others.
