1,000 Sign Petition Supporting Westside Subway

"We Do Our Part LA" wants Metro to build the Westside Subway Extension, regardless of whether it goes under Beverly Hills High School.

A coalition of business organizations, labor unions and community activists known as We Do Our Part LA has started a petition calling on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to move forward with its plans for the Westside Subway Extension.

The petition reads:

Hey MTA! Please approve the Westside Subway Extension! We support the subway because it will create a green alternative and much needed mass transit for the 300,000 people who travel to the Westside every day. And, it will create much needed jobs right here in L.A.

As of Sunday the petition has more than 1,000 signatures, according to Lisa Cohen of We Do Our Part LA.

"The MTA is in the process of holding hearings about the proposed Westside Subway Extension project, which the We Do Our Part coalition strongly supports," Cohen said. "This is exactly the kind of infrastructure project the coalition believes can put people back to work, get the economy going and benefit L.A. in the long run."

The Westside Subway Extension would expand the Purple Line, which goes from downtown L.A. to Wilshire Boulevard/Western Avenue, to a station at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Brentwood. The proposed route would bring subway stops to Beverly Hills, Century City and Westwood along the way.

Current plans for the subway call for  to reach Century City, a decision  by many Beverly Hills civic leaders and residents. There is also a for people who want to prevent Metro from routing the subway under BHHS.

We Do Our Part LA is holding a Westside Subway Extension Support Rally on the corner of Constellation Boulevard and Avenue of the Stars in Century City—the location of Metro's proposed Century City station—April 25 at noon in support of Metro's plans to build a stop there. Los Angeles Councilman Paul Koretz will be a featured speaker at the event.

Editor's Note: This article has been amended to state that the We Do Our Part rally is at noon on April 25. Apologies for any confusion.

Trying to protect our High School is "politics" to you... I see. The High School is the center piece of our community, forgive us if we want to make sure that the impact wont be too great before this goes too far.

Ummmm... excuse me but the whole area is a big earthquake fault... perhaps you should leave the comments on structural safety to experts.

The thing that I would like to ask all of the proponents for the tunnel under the High School is this: Would it change your mind ANY if it were certain that the project would disrupt students at BHHS? or do you people have this image of BHHS being some posh little 1%er school that deserves to take a blow? It seems that there is a lot of passive aggressive energy by the proponents on this thread that has nothing to do with a subway.... Because the truth is that the majority of families using BHhS are working people who are dependent upon public education, many have flocked here and cram their families into apartments just so they can access a decent education for their kids... but somehow some people see that as being "selfish"...

The BH Courier's latest release on line states that 800+ residents have signed a petition voicing opposition to tunneling under the high school. What it doesn't say is that each school kid was sent home by their teacher with a petition for their parents to sign. Pathetic!

wait isn't BHHS trying to build underground parking how is that safer than a tunnel? its essentially a much larger empty space
