Metro Board to Study Tolls for 405 Carpool Lane

The 405 freeway project's cost overruns prompts officials to consider congestion pricing, which is already being tested on the I-110 freeway.

Officials overseeing $1 billion I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project are studying the possibility to install toll lanes on the freeway's high-occupancy vehicle lane once completed, according to LAStreetsblog.

The Metro board of directors approved the study at its late June meeting, and staff is expected to report back in a month or two.

The 405 freeway widening project between the I-10 to the U.S. 101 has become unpopular since Metro announced in April the project was already overrun $100 million and delayed another year.

Metro Board Chairman Michael Antonvich told FOX11 he's actually against congestion pricing, but proposed the study because if the HOV lane is not tolled, L.A. County residents will foot the bill even though the 405 Freeway is mostly used by commuters in the Valley and the Westside.

Metro is experimenting with congestion pricing on the I-110 Freeway ExpressLanes, which adjusts the amount of the toll in accordance with how many people are using the freeway.

Do you think the 405 HOV lane should become an ExpressLane? What do you think of the timing of this measure?
