Westwood Church Fire Declared Arson

A fire at the Westwood Hills Christian Church is being investigated as a case of arson.

A fire that damaged a 61-year-old church in Westwood was declared an act of arson, a fire department spokesman said Saturday.

Firefighters sent to Westwood Hills Christian Church at 10808 Le Conte Ave. at 9:14 p.m. Friday found furnishings in the Gothic-style church in flames, Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

The fire caused about $5,000 in damage, he said.

Fire investigators with the House of Worship Arson Task Force, which includes Los Angeles police and federal agents, determined the fire was the work of an arsonist, according to Humphrey.

No immediate arrest were announced. Humphrey urged anyone with more information about the fire, or who may have started it, to call firefighters at (213) 893-9800.
