Police: Bicyclist Killed in Westwood Not Wearing Helmet

The Los Angeles Police Department encourages bicyclists to wear helmets after an 18-year-old rider dies Friday.

An 18-year-old bicyclist in Westwood after colliding with a cement wall was not wearing a helmet, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Jerico Culata, of Los Angeles, was riding his bike southbound on De Neve Drive when he crashed on campus.

The LAPD has since urged bicyclists to wear helmets. All cyclists under 18 are required by law to wear helmets, according to the LAPD.

Culata was one of more than 700 participants in a Critical Mass cycling event. He was declared dead at , where he was taken by ambulance after the 9:50 p.m. crash.
