3300 Brush Helmets for Los Angeles' Firefighters

The Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation is raising funds to provide LA’s 3300 firefighters with brush helmets.  The helmet is designed for extreme wild fire situations in scrub, forests and the urban landscape.  It is fire retardant, durable and offers maximum sun and heat protection.  One helmet costs $45, a nominal price to protect LA’s brave first responders.

Every 36 seconds a unit of the LAFD rolls out to protect lives, property and the environment.  With 96% of the department’s city budget allocated to salaries and benefits, the need for private support is crucial.  The LAFD Foundation provides essential equipment, technology, training and youth programs to supplement the city budget and keep your fire department providing service at the highest level.

We have been fortunate not to have had a major incident where firefighters need brush helmets, but preparedness is part of the department’s tradition.  When we do have a major disaster, we want our firefighters to have the best gear possible and to be safe as they save us.  Approximately 17% of the area of Los Angeles is wildland, so the threat of brush fires is always strong.

The Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation is the major source of private support for the LAFD.  The brush helmet campaign is a grassroots opportunity for anyone to purchase a helmet for a firefighter for $45, a chance to show the first responders who care for us that we care for them.

Donations can be made on the foundation’s website:  www.supportlafd.org or at 855-9-LAFIRE (855-952-3473).
