Memorials, Tributes Honor Marilyn Monroe This Weekend

Sunday is the 50th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe's death. Several events are planned to honor her in Los Angeles, and a service is planned at her resting place in Westwood.

It's been 50 years since the death of Hollywood actress, model and singer Marilyn Monroe. Every year, her fans organize a week of events to honor the life and accomplishments of the blonde beauty and cultural icon. Events happening all over Los Angeles this weekend include a tour of spots significant to the star's life, signings by authors of the many books written about Monroe and a memorial service at her grave in Westwood. Immortal Marilyn Home and Haunts Tour*

Where: Departs from the Hollywood Orchid Suites - 1753 Orchid Ave

Time: 11:00 a.m.to 7:00 p.m.

What: Take a bus tour of the spots where Marilyn lived and worked. 

*The tour is currently fully booked but there is a waitlist. The tour's organizers created a list of spots to visit if you want to do a walking tour on your own time.

 

Saturday, August 4

Fox Luncheon with Outside Lot Tour & Studio Store shopping

Where: 10201 West Pico Blvd

Time: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

What: Attendees will tour the place where Marilyn spent most of her movie-making career: the 20th Century Fox studio. After the tour, attendees will gather to enjoy a buffet style luncheon in the spot where Monroe would eat meals on filming breaks.

Cost: $75

 

Book Signing

Where: Hollywood Museum.

Time: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

What: The Hollywood Museum's exhibit on Marilyn Monroe has been open since early June. On Saturday the museum hosts a book signing with George Barris, the last celebrity photographer to do a photoshoot with Marilyn before her death. He will autograph his book Marilyn: Her Life in Her Own Words: Marilyn Monroe's Revealing Last Words.

'Marilyn: Forever Blonde' at the El Portal Theatre

Where: El Portal Theatre, 5269 Lankershim Boulevard, North Hollywood

Time: 8 p.m. 

What: The show 'Marilyn: Forever Blonde' will be followed by a meet and greet with members of the Immortal Marilyn Fan Club, as well as a "talk-back" with the star of the production, actress Sunny Thompson.

 

Sunday, August 5

50th Anniversary Memorial Service for Marilyn Monroe 

Where: Westwood Memorial Park, 1218 Glendon Avenue

Time: 12 p.m.

What: A memorial service, hosted by 'The Marilyn Remembered Fan Club, will take place in front of Monroe's lipstick-stained plot at the park. A reception will follow the service at Westwood Presbyterian Church fellowship hall.

 

A River of No Return

Where: Egyptian Theatre, 6712 Hollywood Boulevard

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What: Watch a screening of 'River of No Return,' a movie starring Marilyn Monroe and Robert Mitchum. Author Lois Banner will also be present to sign copies of her book Marilyn: The Passion and Paradox.
