Peter Baker: Washington--From Inside the White House

Dinner with Peter Baker.
America – and the world - watched with a mix of apprehension and incredulity as Congress and the White House struggled to find a way to prevent the US defaulting on its debts for the first time in its history.  On Nov 5th the Los Angeles World Affairs Council will hold a dinner with Peter Baker, the Chief White House Correspondent for The New York Times, whose job put him right at the heart of the storm.  Baker will talk about the inside politicking that led to the impasse, the temporary deal that was cut, and the long term fall-out for the President, the Congress, the American people and the international community.

As the New York Time’s top reporter in the White House covering President Obama and his administration, Baker has extraordinary access to the decision-making process that ultimately guides our nation.  He will also talk about the major foreign policy issues facing the President, including Syria, Iran, Egypt and China.  Prior to joining The Times in 2008, Baker was a reporter for 20 years at The Washington Post, where he also covered the White House during the presidencies of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. In between stints at the White House, Baker and his wife, Susan Glasser, spent four years as Moscow Bureau Chiefs, chronicling the rise of Vladimir Putin. Baker also covered the early months of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Baker is author of Days of Fire: Bush and Cheney in the White House, published by Doubleday in October 2013, the first full history of the eight years of the last administration.  He has also written books about the impeachment of President Clinton and the rise of Vladimir Putin.
