L. Lee Phillips to be Named Entertainment Lawyer of the Year by Bev Hills Bar Assoc April 16

Attorney L. Lee Phillips, senior partner of Manatt,
Phelps & Phillips LLP and a leader in the music industry for more than 35
years, will be honored as 2014 Entertainment Lawyer of the Year by the
Entertainment Law Section of the Beverly Hills Bar Association (BHBA) at its
prestigious annual Awards Dinner on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at 5:30 p.m., at
The Beverly Hills Hotel.  Bassist/record
producer Randy Jackson (“American Idol”) is the Master of Ceremonies, and
honorary chairs include music legends Burt Bacharach and Paul Anka.  Proceeds from the event support the bar
association’s education and community outreach programs.



 



The Entertainment Lawyer of the Year
Award honors
leaders of the entertainment law field for their contributions to the
profession and has
been presented annually since 1989 by the BHBA, which has the largest
entertainment law section of any bar association in the world.

Phillips
focuses primarily on contract negotiations within the music industry and acts
as the general legal advisor to a multitude of major musicians, recording
artists, composers, record companies and publishing companies.  His broad base of knowledge enables him to provide
his clients with strategic and tactical guidance, as well as the gamut of legal
advice ranging from litigation, licensing and corporate issues to copyright,
privacy, tax issues and the sale of publishing catalogs, among other matters.
In addition to Jackson, Bacharach and Anka, his clients include such internationally
renowned performers as Barbra Streisand, Brian Wilson, Eagles, Neil Young,
Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, Tracy Chapman and Jeff Barry.  Phillips, who earned an A.B. from Cornell
University and J.D. with distinction from Cornell Law School, began his career
as a tax trial attorney with the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.  He started in private practice in California
in 1963 and steadily developed his entertainment clientele.  In 1977, he joined the firm that was
eventually named Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP.
