'Seussical' Takes the Stage

The musical narrated by the Cat in the Hat is based on the works of Dr. Seuss.

1. Hooligan Theatre Company's second production of the season, Seussical: The Musical, based on the works of Dr. Seuss, will have about 40 UCLA students in the cast. The show is free for students, $27 general admission, with discounts for non-UCLA students, seniors, faculty and staff. The show starts at 8 p.m. in the campus' Little Theater. Tickets at Ticketmaster. The show is narrated by the Cat in the Hat, no April Fool's joke.

2. UCLA sports today: Men's tennis vs. Washington, 1:30 p.m.; Baseball vs. Washington, 6 p.m.; Softball vs. Oregon State, 7 p.m.; men's volleyball vs. UC San Diego, 7 p.m.

3. Ruby the African elephant, who lived for 20 years at the Los Angeles Zoo before being sent to a San Andreas sanctuary in 2007 after years of lobbying by animal-rights activists, has died at age 50, zoo officials announced Thursday.

4. Record high temperatures were recorded in Long Beach and downtown Los Angeles Thursday at the start of a mini heat wave. At a reporting station at USC near downtown Los Angeles, the mercury reached 92 degrees, breaking the old record of 90 set on this date in 1966, according to the National Weather Service. Elsewhere, temperatures were near 80 at the beaches, the upper 80s inland and the mid-80s to lower 90s in the valleys.

5. Weather today: Sunny with highs from the lower to mid 70s. Tonight: Low clouds and fog with lows in the mid to upper 50s.
