Heat Advisory Issued for LA Through Thursday

Temperatures are expected to hover near triple digits for the next few days, and rain and thunderstorms are possible, according to an alert from the National Weather Service.

Highs at the beaches will reach the mid-80s and the valleys and foothills could see temperatures as high as 107.

During the "Excessive Heat Warning" issued for the last weekend in August, the LA County Sheriff's Department offered up the following heat wave safety tips:

• Schedule strenuous activity for the coolest time of the day.
• Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing to reflect the sunlight.
• Maintain a lighter diet (foods high in protein can increase metabolic heat production and cause you to lose water).
• Drink water, even if you don't feel thirsty (if you suffer from epilepsy, heart, kidney or liver disease, ask your doctor before increasing your fluid intake).
• Stay away from alcoholic beverages.
• Seek out air-conditioned places (if you don't have air conditioning, there are cooling centers throughout Los Angeles).
• Stay out of the sun to avoid sunburn.
• Never leave kids or pets in a closed, parked car.

The National Weather service says if you think you are suffering from heat stroke, call 911.
