Free CPR Lessons Throughout L.A. County Tuesday

Free "Sidewalk" CPR lessons will be offered by the Los Angeles County Fire Department and throughout Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Los Angeles County Fire Department firefighters will teach free "hands-only" CPR lessons Tuesday throughout the county during Sidewalk CPR Day.

The simplified CPR techinque, which firefighters often call a "lay person's CPR," emphasizes basic chest compressions at a rate of 100 per minute and drops the mouth-to-mouth resuscitation part of CPR.

Officials said that anyone can quickly master the techinque and Tuesday's free lessons will take less than 10 minutes working with a trained firefighter or lifeguard.

According to the American Heart Association, who is promoting the simplified technique, CPR can more than double a person's chances of survival and is simple enough for a child to learn.
