Century City Mall Construction Beginning Soon

A major construction project at Westfield Century City is scheduled to begin later this year.

The Century City mall is getting ready to grow upward soon, though plans for the mall's expansion were approved three years ago.

A second story of retail shops at Westfield Century City and a 39-story tower on Avenue of the Stars and Santa Monica Boulevard may start to materialize by the end of 2012, reports Curbed LA and the Los Angeles Business Journal (subscription required to access this story).

The expected completion date for the second story of retail? 2017.

The 39-story tower would have 262 residential units and a Bloomingdale's on the ground floor. The buildings at 1801 Avenue of the Stars (the building with the red "Westfield" sign on it) and 1930 Century Park West would be demolished to make way for the new tower and a parking structure, according to Curbed LA.

The tower was originally designed to have 49 stories, but it was reduced to 39 in 2008 and approved by the Los Angeles City Planning Commission in June 2009.
