George Stern Fine Arts is proud to present the exhibition “Bridging the Gap: Linking American Scene Painting to Post-War Modernism” as part of Pacific Standard Time. This unprecedented collaboration, initiated by the Getty, brings together more than sixty cultural institutions from across Southern California for six months beginning October 2011 to tell the story of the birth of the L.A. art scene. “Bridging the Gap” showcases artists at the tail end of American Scene Painting to Post-War Modernism from the 1940s-1970s. While abstraction was becoming a predominant form of art in Southern California during the Post-World War II period, many leading artists continued to produce representational paintings. Artists during this period had various interpretations, yet they shared in common the desire to produce figurative works. Artists such as Millard Sheets and Phil Dike depicted their surroundings in a traditional style while artists such as Robert Frame and Roger Kuntz embraced the new and painted figurative works with a modernist flair. This exhibition explores the connection between a traditional and Modernist representation of art in Southern California.
The exhibition will open with a reception on October 15, 2011 from 5-8pm and run through November 19, 2011. Pacific Standard Time is an initiative of the Getty. The presenting sponsor is Bank of America.
