Top 5 Westside Stories: Missing Woman, Malibu's Hospitality, Joyride, Fire and a Crash

Here's a handful of stories that led Westside Patch sites from the past week.

Close out your weekend with a recap of the newsiest and most popular Patch articles from last week. Here are five stories that topped the headlines on Westside Patch sites:

  • Road Trip!: Caroline Karimi, an 18-year-old Westside resident, had been missing since Monday morning, triggering a call for help by the LAPD, her family, and various media outlets, including this one. It turns out she went on a road trip to Wyoming with two friends.
  • Malibu vs. the L.A. Times: Malibu residents weren't happy about a Los Angeles Times editorial that basically called out the city for a lack of hospitality toward its legions of surf-seeking visitors. As you'd guess, people responded in kind to the Times, and the discussion also continued on Patch. Feel free to join it!
  • Fire video: A fire torched the kitchen of Yankee Doodles in Santa Monica. Thankfully, no one was hurt.
  • Venice Joyride: A fake valet in Venice took a $200,000 Mercedes on a joyride to Van Nuys and got put in jail at the end of the adventure. Police located the car via its built-in tracking technology and found the faux valet outside of a VFW. A foot chase ensued, but the man, Dylan Coffey, was found hiding under a woodpile.
  • Big crash in Culver City: Culver City Police dealt with a major traffic collision at the corner of Washington Boulevard and McLaughlin Avenue on Thursday night. Scanner reports said one person was critically injured, when their vehicle smashed into a light pole and brought it down. Readers shared photos from the scene.
