Library Invites Teens to Get Animated
A professional cartoonist will lead a workshop Thursday at the Westwood Branch library.
Teens can create their own cartoon with the help of award-winning cartoonist Jennifer Shiman on Thursday at the Westwood Library.
The Cartoon Workshop will take place at 4 p.m. and is the kickoff event for the library’s Teen Summer Reading Program. Shiman won two Webby Awards for her flash cartoon series featuring Hollywood blockbusters re-enacted by animated bunnies in just 30 seconds.
“She’s going to show the kids how to make their own cartoon, whether it’s based on themselves or a fictional character, then they can take it from there,” said Annie Cipolla, teen librarian.

Shiman’s bunny parodies of movies such as Jaws, Star Wars and Titanic have become an Internet sensation since she released her first animated short, The Exorcist, in 2004. She writes, storyboards, voices and animates each short from her home studio.
Teens who love cartoons or have always dreamed of creating their own are encouraged to attend, Cipolla said.

“Teens who love graphic novels and cartoons, who read the funnies every day, those are the teens who will enjoy a program like this,” she said.

Other upcoming events for teens at the library include “The Magic of Printmaking” at 2 p.m. July 16 and “Games & Guacamole!” at 3:30 p.m. July 29.
