BLOG: Assembly Candidate Torie Osborn Goes Negative

The first negative mailer in the 50th Assembly District race is sent by Torie Osborn against Betsy Butler.

The candidate that says “I’m not politics as usual” plays politics usual. Irony?

If it wasn’t enough for Assembly Candidate Torie Osborn to stuff the mailboxes at homes in the 50th Assembly District residents with 16 pages of non-recyclable paper in one day, she has decided that her best chance to win this race is to attack Betsy Butler by calling her a Republican. The same Betsy Butler who worked for President Bill Clinton. The same Betsy Butler who worked for Democratic Lt. Governor Leo McCarthy. The same Betsy Butler who is endorsed by the California Democratic Party and by the California League of Conservation Voters.

Torie Osborn then goes on to attack Butler's record on funding education. Betsy Butler was raised in a union household and understands the need to give kids the best opportunity possible in our schools. Betsy’s mom worked for years for the California Teachers Association and instilled in Betsy from a young age that education was the most important solution for most of the world’s problems. Betsy has been fighting for Education since then and that is why LAUSD School Board Member Marguerite LaMotte, Los Angeles Community College Board Trustees Miguel Santiago, Steve Veres & Scott Svonkin support Betsy in AD50.

Really, Torie? Are we going to begin with the lies?

Attack piece 1A — Attack piece 1B — Attack Piece 1C

I’m offended that Torie has decided to lie about Betsy Butler, a progressive champion for the Democratic Party. Torie’s main argument is that she is “not politics as usual” and that she is “a new kind of leader.” But unfortunately, for Torie, negative campaigning is not new in politics. The campaign mailer sent and paid for by her campaign has made Torie the first and only candidate to go negative against progressive Democrat Betsy Butler. So far, Mayor Richard Bloom, Assemblywoman Betsy Butler and Brad Torgan have refused to go negative.

Don’t be fooled by Torie Osborn on June 5. Betsy Butler is the only candidate endorsed by the California Democratic Party, Los Angeles County Democratic Party and by the Beach Cities Democratic Club. Betsy is the only one endorsed by the LA County Federation of Labor and by the Sierra Club. . The mailer that is attached, tells you everything you need to know about Torie Osborn not about Betsy.

This is not the first time Betsy has been attacked. When she first ran for Assembly in 2010, she was attacked by insurance companies. Now its Torie’s turn to attack Betsy. The negative campaign has begun brought and paid for “Torie Osborn for Assembly 2012”.

You have the opportunity in Betsy Butler to re-elect a progressive champion to the State Assembly, I hope you do! www.betsybutler.com

Senator Fran Pavley did indeed give this quote for this race:"Betsy's unmatched tenacity and commitment has ensured that California children will finally be adequately protected from dangerous chemicals. Betsy Butler is among our most effective fighters for consumers, our environment and our children. She told me it was in recognition for her work banning BPA from baby bottles and children's cups. The California League of Conservation Voters, Planned Parenthood, Sierra Club, Womens Political Committee and NWPC proudly stand with Betsy Butler for re-election to the 50th AD because of all she has done and continues to do to protect Californians. And she is running a positive, clean campaign respecting the voters

Senator Pavley made the statement quoted in the mailer a few MONTHS ago, with the understanding that it would be used in a mailer for this campaign. Senator Pavley gave the campaign this quote in appreciation for Assemblymember Butler’s successful effort in taking on the chemical industry to (finally) ban the use of BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups and for her efforts on education and the environment.

It is obvious from the quote that Senator Pavley’s statement was given after the BPA legislation passed in October 2011 – only six months ago -- not for the Assembly race two years ago: “Betsy’s unmatched tenacity and commitment has ensured that California children will finally be adequately protected from dangerous chemicals. Betsy Butler is among our most effective fighters for consumers, our environment and our children.” – Senator Fran Pavley

@Jearl: Here is a quote from Malibu President Jean Goodman on Torie Obsorn hijacking their endorsement meeting Club President Jean Goodman wrote in an email to Patch, "We received a $1,000 contribution for payment of dues for a group of Torie Osborn supporters [with each membership costing $25] ... as to the name of the contributor, we will disclose that in our next report to the Secretary of State." $1,000 divided by $25 per membership = 40 new memberships. If anything, Torie scored 1 real vote, which is 4 votes less than Betsy. Do the math. http://www.malibu.patch.com/articles/malibu-dems-controversially-back-osborn-for-state-assembly
