Emerson Middle School Debuts Shakespeare Program

Emerson Middle School students in the Arts & Media Academy’s popular drama program premiered the school’s first production of a William Shakespeare play.   Sixth, seventh and eighth graders spent the first semester learning about Elizabethan times and studying the play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in preparation for the play performance.  The production was part of a school-wide Shakespeare Initiative that the English Department has integrated into its English Language Arts curriculum and is a key academic component of the school’s pending charter. Every student at Emerson studies a new Shakespeare play each year that will be performed by students, with costumes designed by studens in the costume design class. The plays are on a five-year rotation. Thus, each student will have studied three different plays before he or she culminates to high school.  The English Department is already planning the next play in the cycle, “Twelfth Night,” which the students will study and perform in the fall.
