PBS is Going to the Dogs

A new Public Broadcasting Service documentary examines the UCLA medical Center's People-Animal Connection program.

An upcoming PBS documentary series will feature four-legged stars and their handlers, both of UCLA's People-Animal Connection (PAC) program.

The new series, Shelter Me: Let's Go Home, shares stories about shelter pets and the people whose lives they improve, according to a UCLA post on NewsWise, which goes on to say the show follows a some human and dog teams as they volunteer at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

PAC teams offer companionship and warmeth to more than 900 critically ill children and adults per month, according to the program's page on the UCLA Health website. It's core function is to enhance physical healing and emotional well-being of patients and, at UCLA, the dog/human teams provide care for the critically ill of all socioeconomic levels, including underserved and indigent individuals who might not have any other visitors, the school's website reported. The program is recognized nationally and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations uses PAC protocols to promote animal assisted therapy.

Locally, NewsWise reports, the show will air on KOCE at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday and 7 p.m. April 9.
