Opinion: Westside Subway Extension Hurts Museum Row

An op-ed in the Los Angeles Times says the Purple Line extension is not good for some of Los Angeles' smaller museums.

The Westside Subway Extension is a hot topic for residents, business owners and schools, but how will it affect the local arts community?

An opinion piece in the Los Angeles Times says the extension of the Purple Line through Museum Row to Beverly Hills, Century City and Westwood will be the end of some smaller museums and galleries near LACMA and the Petersen Automotive Museum. The news came in Metro's final report and recommendations on the Westside Subway Extension. The author of the piece is Greg Goldin, who writes about architecture for Los Angeles Magazine and co-curated an exhibition at one of the galleries.

The A+D architecture museum, the Steve Turner Contemporary galleries, and the Edward Cella Art+Architecture will be on the chopping block, but the Times editorial says the gallery owners all support the subway extension.

As gallery owner Edward Cella says, "I have great sympathy for the subway project. It's a dream of all Los Angeles." But that doesn't mean he's happy about the ouster. "I purposely moved my gallery from Santa Barbara to be in this network of spaces next to the A+D, across the street from LACMA, down the block from the Petersen. The context is irreplaceable." -- Los Angeles Times editorial
