Man Barricades Self in West LA Home, LAPD Responds

The man fired shots at LAPD officers but no one was injured.

A SWAT team today arrested an armed man who barricaded himself for about 10 hours inside a West Los Angeles home, threatened suicide and exchanged gunfire with officers, police said.

No one was wounded during the incident, which ended about 6:45 a.m., but the man was being assessed for exposure to tear gas, which officers used to subdue him before his arrest, said Officer Bruce Borihanh of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations office. His name was not immediately released.

Police were called to the 11400 block of Rochester Avenue near Butler Avenue in West Los Angeles around 8:40 p.m. Monday after someone phoned from out of state to say the man was despondent and threatening to kill himself and others, Borihanh said. Police went to the location and established a perimeter around the residence, he said.

After several hours, the man came onto a balcony and fired numerous rounds, prompting at least one officer to return fire, he said, adding that no officer was hit. Police evacuated some nearby residences and maintained telephone contact with the man. In the end, he was arrested after the SWAT team fired tear gas canisters into the home, police said.

Helicopters began circling around the Westwood-West Los Angeles area since approximately 10:30 p.m.
