Letter to the Editor: PGA, Get Off Our VA Lawn!

Veterans advocate Robert Rosebrock writes to Patch about his displeasure with the PGA Tour for using VA land to park on. He's also not happy with Patch for its "favorable coverage" of the tournament.

Editor's Note: Robert Rosebrock, veteran news columnist for Veterans Today, has been an outspoken advocate for homeless veterans and what he says is a misappropriation of Veterans Administration land in West Los Angeles. Rosebrock and other supporters hold weekly protests at the entrance of the Veterans National Park on Wilshire Boulevard.

I have not been at all pleased with the favorable coverage the Palisades PGA tournament has gotten on the Brentwood Patch. It seems somebody from Brentwood should be speaking out about all the gridlock. As far as the VA, it's a complete sell-out to the local fat-cats.   As mentioned in the past, it is pointless to discuss these problems locally, and we're taking it nationally with Veterans Today and Veterans National News.

Rosebrock recently wrote of his displeasure with the PGA Tour using VA land for car parking:

The surge of PGA attendee vehicles and large tour buses driving through to park on the National Veterans Home is reprehensible.   When will common sense, decency, respect, honor and appreciation surface above this outrageous disrespect of America's disabled and homeless Veterans?   When will President Obama and Secretary Shinseki honor their fiduciary duty to maintain these sacred grounds as a National Home for Disabled Veterans?   Enough of the catering to the wealthy and powerful at the insulting expense of disabled and impoverished Veterans.

What do you think about Mr. Rosebrock's concerns? Tell us in the comments section below.

Correction: A previous version of the editor's note incorrectly stated that Rosebrock and others want to build housing for all of the homeless veterans in Los Angeles, approximately 8,000, according to the Veterans Administration.

Does the PGA pay to use the VA for parking? If so, how much?

We must use this land for its intended purpose. Our veterans have served our nation. The homeless and disabled veterans should not be forgotten.

It takes constant public pressure to counter the nearly irresistible economic forces that for centuries have caused veterans who have been damaged in their countries' wars to be discarded (aside from a few statues and plaques and occasional rituals that honor them). The VA grounds are almost sure to be sold off for commercial use despite the obvious needs of veterans... unless advocates maintain a barrage of complaints and exposures , keep exposing creeping invasion of proper use of the land and facilities, and take steps to inform the general public. It is not clear that even hefty fees exacted from the lucrative golfing establishment for staging vehicles on the VA land is worth the erosive effects created by tolerating the encroachment. Regulations should compel administrators to restrict use of the land to promoting the mission of the VA in ways other than simply generating revenue. Drawing-in audiences through on-site sales of veteran-made or -grown products, by hosting cultural activities (not just veteran-run events), operating educational tours for schools... those kinds of uses can make people more aware of the VA and of society's relationship with its veterans. Parking golf buses on the property surely has a negative effect.

Myron, You've made some excellent points. The VA is sacred grounds for the vets. These men and women have fought for our freedom and preserving the peace. The PGA and everyone else, for that matter, should respect their sacrifice as such. For the last few months, I have donated time at the VA. It has been an eye opening experience. For instance, there is a women's dorm on the property for returning female vets to help them assimilate into society. And all of soldiers who are in drug treatment or being treated for PTSD. And the Vietnam Vets who are still being treated for injuries all these years later. And while I'm on the subject, why hasn't the city of Los Angeles organized a welcome home parade for the Iraq vets. The community of LA should do more to recognize the vets and not continue to take away the only place they can go for commercial use.

In re: the "Editors note" above I take exception to his misinformative spin, that " The group ultimately wants the land to be used to build a massive housing development for the estimated 20,000 homeless veterans in Los Angeles"....Please retract that bald-faced lie. There is no room for falsification or rumors of this kind unless you are an editor who was trained in the Rupert Murdoch School of Journalism. Come to the Sunday rally and interview the veterans that are taking a stand for ALL homeless veterans (much more than 20 K) in LA county...
If you'd care to hear the truth, just leave your hyperbolic pen & pad at home.

Well, it turns out I may have been a bit generous with the number of homeless veterans in Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, there are less than 10,000 homeless veterans in Los Angeles as of July 2011. See the attached pdf. I'll keep looking for the 20,000 figure. I'll also add a correction with regard to Rosebrock's motives in housing homeless veterans. When I asked him if I should run a correction, he told me not to. That led me to believe that what I wrote was accurate.

And J.J. Citizen, I've already done a story on the Sunday rally. Were you there that day? I hope to bump into you at the Veterans Appreciation Day event on March 4.

Scott, I'm working on getting an answer to the question you've raised.

@J.J. Citizen You realize that Jared himself is former Marine, who I am sure cares greatly about both his country and other vets.
