Curious antique owners were able to learn if their belongings were priceless or simply old at the Trash or Treasure event hosted by the Century City Chamber of Commerce Arts and Cultural Affairs Council.

Community members were able to bring in antiques and collectibles for free appraisals by appraisers from Bonhams on Tuesday in Century City.

Jean Tardy-Vallernaud, who helped organize the event, brought in some antique books including a 17th century book with an ancestor’s name written inside. Appraiser Catherine Williamson said the books were worth about $100 apiece.

Vivian Flitton brought in some plates, an old map of North America that showed California as an island and a statue. She discovered that the plates and statue didn’t have much value, but the map was worth upwards of $700.
